Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence – a major coup for Queensland
The Department of State Development, Manufacture, Infrastructure and Planning has overseen the construction of a new high-tech manufacturing hub on behalf of Rheinmetall Defence Australia at Redbank Plains, west of Brisbane. Watpac Construction were appointed the Managing Contractor for the $170 million venture, due for completion by the end of 2020.
This milestone project is an invaluable coup for Queensland as it has generated hundreds of local jobs, injected millions into the state’s economy and secured its position at the forefront of military vehicle development, manufacture and supply for decades to come.
The complex comprises a main production facility, administration building, corporate function centre, vehicle compliance test track and indoor weapons test firing range and will facilitate a programme of continuous design, building and support for up to 5,000 military vehicles in Australia and the Asia Pacific region and is a key step in the $5 billion Land 400 Phase 2 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle Program.
Beenleigh Steel was commissioned to fabricate and erect over 1,700 tonnes of steelwork.
